It’s easy to lose motivation for your workouts, especially during this pandemic. Your motivation may have understandably dipped after a few months in lockdown but there are ways you can keep yourself motivated and on track even now. With a few simple adjustments, you can increase your motivations massively and get back on track within your fitness journey to help you stay fit, active and healthy.
Ways to Keep Yourself Motivated
Make a schedule
Creating a schedule for your workouts might make you more likely to stick to the workouts you anticipate completing. Knowing when and roughly how long you’re going to work out for in the week lets you prepare yourself to do it. As a bonus, it gives you a visual aid that reminds and prompts you to follow through.
Create challenges for yourself
Everyone loves a challenge, right? Giving yourself a challenge could spark a fire in your motivation, you now have something to work towards and achieve in a competitive way. Getting a friend to do the challenge with you is a fantastic idea, some friendly competition might get you even more motivated.
Set goals
Setting goals gives you something to work towards. Not having a clear idea of what you’re trying to achieve might make it harder for you to get there. Having goals sets a foundation for your workouts. It allows you to remember the reasons why you’re wanting to work out, whether it’s to get healthy, gain strength, stay active or lose weight. A tip for setting goals is to consider making it a SMART goal.
SMART stands for:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Realistic
- Timely.
Mix up your workouts
Keep yourself on your toes, mix it up. Doing the same workout week after week is going to get tedious and boring after a while. Keep it interesting, try new workouts, revisit old ones or find some new fitness inspiration from people you follow on social media platforms to give you some inspiration.
Do exercises you enjoy
There’s nothing less motivating than having to do something you don’t actually enjoy doing. If you don’t find your workouts fun, it ends up feeling like a chore you have to force yourself to do. Stick to workouts and exercises that you enjoy doing and find beneficial to you, you’ll find yourself looking forward to working out rather than dreading it.
Work out with a friend (over a video call)
Getting a friend or a group of friends involved in your workouts holds you accountable. How many times have you told yourself you’re going to wake up early and do a workout only to abandon it last minute? When you involve other people you’ll be much less likely to flake out last minute. It also gives you a chance to feel social whilst simultaneously staying healthy and active!
The importance/benefits of staying motivated at home
Exercise has so many advantages and benefits to your health, mentally and physically. Especially in lockdown, you may be feeling isolated, unproductive, bored and concerned for yourself and your loved ones. A workout can take your mind off all of this and give you something to achieve.
If you’ve been working on your fitness for a long time, you don’t want a lack of gym access to put a dent in your hard work and progress. You may not be able to do your usual routine but adapting your workouts so they are accessible is still possible.
