Home workouts can be tricky. It’s much easier to get distracted and you might find it far less motivating than being in the gym. However, there are several things you can do to maximise your chance of completing a successful home workout.
Create a Workout Space
You might be lucky enough to have a room dedicated to your gym needs, however, a lot of people don’t. As long as the space you create has enough room for you to stretch out and do your exercises without breaking anything, you can exercise pretty much anywhere at home. Having a designated space to complete your workout can get you in the right mindset when you’re in it.
It also means you can keep any equipment you use in one spot. Put resistance bands, yoga mats, weights or whatever else you use in a box/basket in your gym space. This allows you to keep the flow of your workout instead of stopping to go find a piece of equipment.
Eliminate Possible Distractions
Turn off your phone, or at least mute your notifications. Nothing will wreak havoc on your workout more than a phone constantly buzzing with notifications, you can’t help but stop what you’re doing to check them.
Have you got pets? Put them in another room if possible. Pets are constantly under our feet wanting something from us and this can be very distracting. While you work out, keep your space pet-free for a distraction-free workout.
Wear Your Gym Kit
Working out at home means you could do it in the comfort of your pyjamas but that’s not the best idea if you want to have a successful home workout. Pyjamas are for sleeping and lounging, this is pretty much the opposite of what working out is. Get your gym kit on and you’ll feel much more in the mood and hyped to work out.
Follow a YouTube Video
Following a YouTube video can be very beneficial. At-home workouts can often make you feel lost with what exercises to do, or decrease your motivation to do them. Sticking on a helpful video where you can follow along, not only allows you to complete your workout easier but it might inspire you to try new exercises that you hadn’t thought of before. A bonus is that it will feel like you aren’t doing it by yourself.
Play music
Playing music while you workout might make you feel more energised and give you more rhythm as you workout. It also creates a fun atmosphere for you to workout in.
Keep workouts interesting
There’s nothing less motivating than a boring workout. Doing the same exercises over and over will start to feel tedious and become a chore. Switch up your workouts, try new exercises, adapt current ones or add an extra element such as a resistance band to increase the intensity of your workout.
Stay Hydrated
Water doesn’t lose its importance at home. Whether you’re in the gym, at home or outside, you need to ensure you stay well hydrated. Especially if it’s warm out or your environment is warm.
Don’t forget to warm up and cool down
Warm-ups and cool-downs are still crucial for your workout even at home. Priming your body before your workout will boost your muscle strength and it's a good way to ease into your workout routine. Cooling down with stretches will help you avoid muscle pain and strain and allows your body to recover afterwards.
Get moving!
Now you’re armed with new information and ideas to complete a successful home workout. Give yourself space, make your workout fun and interesting, get your gym kit on and always stay hydrated. You’re ready to workout from home, good luck!
